Compostable bags are not perfect, and they have their drawbacks. They require a composting environment to break down. That means they won’t decompose in a regular trash can, or in your home compost pile. They may also be more expensive than your common plastic trash bag.

What are compostable garment bags?

Compostable garment bags are protective sleeves or covers for clothing, made from plant-based materials (such as cornstarch, PLA/polylactic acid derived from corn, PBAT, or cassava). They are designed to fully break down into water, CO₂, and nutrient-rich compost under proper composting conditions, leaving no toxic residues or microplastics—unlike conventional polyethylene (plastic) bags.

How do they differ from regular plastic bags or biodegradable bags?
  • Regular plastic bags (polyethylene) take hundreds of years to break down and often fragment into microplastics.
